Thyroid cancer scans by a dog in the USA

Dogs with stephscope

Dogs have been used for many health and assistance jobs over the years and a dog in the USA has proved to be able to detect Thyroid Caner.  In recent tests a dog tested 34 patients and showed a 88 percent success rate in finding tumours.  As dogs have a much better sense of smell they can be trained to pick up the slight smell given off by cells and then indicate when they find them.

The research is helping to develop electronic tests that could pick up the scent which would be more practical than using dogs in a medical environment.
